his movie is a definitive statement on the style that Amitabh introduced -- the angry, quiet anti-hero. What started with Zanjeer in 1973 touched its zenith with Deewar in 1975 and confirmed Amitabh's status as the real superstar of his day.
In this one, you will not see the singing, dancing, and comic side of the man, but pure strong, no-nonsense silent type with a controlled aggression waiting to gush out. Shashi provides a nice contrast to this character and the conflict keeps getting tense as the movie progresses towards its shattering climax. The theme is very much on the lines of the Dilip classic: Ganga Jamna.
Rumor has it that Yash Chopra was actively involved in discussions wiith other actors to play the lead but Salim-Javed (the writers) convinced him that the role was made for none other than Bachchan. Chopra made a wise choice -- one which was going to repeat itself in his next classic with Bachchan: Kabhie Kabhie. What followed was the birth of a new style of acting which has since then been copied by so many other stars of yesterday and today and is one for the history books....
