I downloaded .rar file. How do I open it and play songs?

.rar is basically like .zip. The files within have to be extracted first.
Try downloading this free software that i use called Rarzilla (http://www.download.com/RarZilla-Free-Unrar/3000-2250_4-10647724.html?tag=lst-1). all you need to do, once you've downloaded it is right click the .rar file and click rarzilla on the sub menu and it will extract the file exactly like .zip
